Guy with guest artist Graham Laurie
A prolific winner of silverware for his achievements as a youngster in the 1970s, he now runs a highly successful music school in Paisley.
Graham, who holds the official diplomas for both teaching and performing, began teaching accordion in 1978 and turned full time professional in 1982. At the Graham Laurie Music Education Centre, Graham teaches accordion and keyboards and supervises the teaching of many other instruments including piano, violin, percussion, guitar, saxophone, clarinet, flute and vocal coaching with new instruments being added as his enterprise continues to grow.
He has also composed and published many accordion pieces in the Scottish traditional and continental styles. The Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) approached him to develop a list of graded pieces for use in the National Curriculum for schools.
Graham has been well known for many years as an adjudicator on the competition circuit throughout the U.K. including the National Accordion Championships, and in more recent years has been invited to judge at the World Accordion Championships in France (2004), Portugal (2005), Norway (2006), USA (2007), Scotland (2008) and New Zealand (2009).
In 2002 Graham Laurie became an examiner for the British College Of Accordionists and in 2006 he accepted the honour of being appointed Vice Principal of the college.
In 1986 The Graham Laurie Accordion Orchestras were formed. This comprised three orchestras (Elementary, Preparatory and Intermediate), all made up of pupils from his school in Paisley, ranging from six-year-olds to adults. The orchestras play at many local and national charity events and have entertained audiences during tours of Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Canada.
Their repertoire includes light classical pieces and popular theme music from television, theatre and film as well as Scottish traditional music.
Many of the experienced players are Scottish and UK solo and group champions. The orchestras are supported by talented musicians who play keyboards and percussion.
The Graham Laurie Accordion Orchestras have also been highly successful on the competition scene winning the British Championships every year since 1986.
